Stewardship
Permanent Endowment Fund UpdateDandridge First United Methodist church has established a PERMANENT ENDOWMENT FUND. During 2009 the Stewardship work area, chaired by Jamie Abart, researched the idea of establishing an endowment fund for future church needs. After meeting with representatives of the Holston Conference Foundation, the Stewardship committee recommended that the Administrative Council establish a Permanent Endowment committee. The council approved the recommendation in May 2009 and the 2009 Charge Conference ratified this decision. During 2010 the Endowment Committee has met several times to develop a fund for DFUMC. An account has been established with the Foundation to receive funds and manage them as an endowment.
The Holston conference Foundation was established by the conference as a separate entity to receive, manage, and invest funds from member churches. Currently there are 100 churches that have accounts with the Foundation. The Foundation started in 1990. In 1991 it was the steward for $22 million. Currently the Foundation manages $59 million. The Foundation takes care of all Internal Revenue Service requirements, manages the funds and is responsible that the funds are used as intended.
At the November meeting of the Administrative Council both the Endowment and Finance Committees recommended that the George Geis gift to DFUMC be transferred to the Foundation. The Geis gift was an unrestricted gift to DFUMC. The historical returns that the Foundation has received are much greater than a CD. The Council approved their recommendation and a DFUMC account has been established.
Currently two other families are in the process of making endowment gifts to the church for specific purposes. This is an excellent way to remember loved ones through a scholarship or meeting future church needs for ministry or maintenance.
